Victoria University of Wellington

Departments of English, Film & Theatre; Music and Architecture & Design.
Toi Whakaari has a close relationship with these departments at Victoria University, which is strengthened through the joint Master of Theatre Arts in Directing course. Students from the University are often involved in aspects of Toi Whakaari MTA productions.

The Film School

Students from The Film School work with first year actors and first and second year Entertainment Technology students in a film block every year. They also often provide crew for other Toi Whakaari films.

Screen Director's Guild of New Zealand

Toi Whakaari's third year acting students make a film every year directed and crewed by renowned screen industry professionals. Many members of the Guild also tutor the Toi Whakaari acting students in screen skills throughout the course.

Whitireia Polytechnic

Every year tutors from Whitireia visit Toi Whakaari and provide intensive Tangata Pacifika courses. Our staff reciprocate with an acting intensive for Whitireia students.

Goethe Institute

The Goethe Institute collaborates with the school in bringing German directors, actors and tutors of distinction to New Zealand. It has also assisted Toi Whakaari in mounting German theatrical works and exhibitions.

International Relationships

California Institute of the Arts

CalArts is one of America's finest arts schools. It offers courses in Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film and Video, Music and Theatre. Toi Whakaari has a developing relationship with CalArts which includes an exchange programme.

University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, USA

Incarnate Word in Texas has a thriving theatre arts department and a long standing relationship with Toi Whakaari. In most years an Incarnate Word student will spend the first week of term on exchange to Toi Whakaari.

La Mancha International School of Image and Gesture

La Mancha is located in Santiago, Chile and is taught by graduates of the Lecoq School. It focuses on movement based physical theatre, incorporating mask, mime, pantomime, Greek chorus work, improvisation and even karate. A student exchange programme has been running since 2001 and a staff exchange is currently mooted.
