Join the Nola Millar Library to borrow from our extensive performing arts collection.

Individuals can become subscription members (but not organisations). Annual membership runs from 12 months from the month of joining (for example, from August 2011 to August 2012).

Membership may be restricted for school students and students of other performing arts institutions. However, students are welcome to use the library for reference. Contact the library for more information.

Finding what you want

You can use the online catalogue to find resources. There are two search options - one for general searching, which will search the entire collection, and one for searching the play collection. In the Play Search you can search by cast number, cast analysis, genre, length, etc. You can access online help from either the Search or the Play Search screens.

The catalogue is updated daily. There are links to lists of new resources on the catalogue home page, and members also receive email notification of the comprehensive list in pdf form which is published near the beginning of every month. There is continuing access to previous lists for several months.

Borrowing

The Library will post books and plays to members outside the Wellington suburban transport region. The Library pays the outgoing postage (but reserves the right to charge for heavy or frequent parcels); the borrower pays the return postage. Simply contact the library by email, phone or fax with your request. If you live locally, come in to the library during opening hours to collect the items you want to borrow.

There is no limit to the number of items you can borrow. The loan period is 30 days for books and plays, and seven days for audio-visual materials. You can renew your loan by phone or email, provided that items are not needed by another borrower.

The Library does not lend audio-visual materials to members outside the Wellington suburban transport region.

Information for teachers

The Library is resourced primarily to serve the students and staff of Toi Whakaari and the New Zealand School of Dance. This is reflected both in the collections and the areas of expertise of its staff.

For help with NCEA topics or suggestions of plays and other resources suitable for school students, you may find the email discussion group Dramanet useful. This national forum has been established to help drama teachers to discuss issues, request help and share resources. Another source of information and resources is the National Library, which, through its Curriculum Services, offers a free service to primary, intermediate and secondary school teachers, providing both selection and provision of a range of resources specifically targeted to support the current school curricula.

Using the Play Search screen in our catalogue, you can generate lists of plays which:

• are by a specific playwright
• are written by playwrights from a specific country
• have a specific number of characters, or specific numbers of men and women

For help in using the features of the Play Search, click the Help icon on that screen.

If you are unable to find suitable plays in our catalogue, you might like to try other websites which provide a cast breakdown and synopsis such as Playmarket or Doollee. Other possible sources for borrowing or hiring single copies and sets of copies are your local public library (including its interlibrary loan services), NZ Theatre Federation or PlayBureau.
