Handspring Puppet Company was founded almost thirty years ago but sprang into international prominence with their amazing life-sized horse “puppets” for Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s War horse at the National Theatre in 2007. This handsome, beautifully illustrated volume, edited by Jane Taylor and entitled simply Handspring Puppet Company, provides a complete overview of their work, tracing their developing philosophy of puppetry, their collaborative approach and innovative techniques.
Eli Simon is a Professor of Acting at the University of California, Irvine and his book The art of clowning is obviously the work of a teacher. Intended for students, it introduces basic principles of clowning and includes practical exercises to develop both physical and improvisational techniques, progressing from simple to more complex. Through the format of the book, he encourages the investigation and development of the reader’s own distinctive clown persona, either solo, or in partnership with other clowns.
Mikhail Chekhov’s memoir of his brother Anton was first published in Russian in 1933. This 2010 translation by American Eugene Alper, Anton Chekhov: a brother’s memoir, is, surprisingly, the first to appear in English. As his brother’s assistant and secretary, Mikhail was in a unique position to observe the playwright’s professional development, but also shares more personal details of family life in an accessible and informal style.
