International Students

Toi Whakaari welcomes applications from overseas students.

The application form (263kb) for international applicants must be filled out by all applicants. Applicants for the acting course need to return this form by Friday 28 August 2009. Applications for all other courses are due on Friday 25 September 2009. There is a $100 fee for all overseas applicants.

Phone interviews can be arranged for overseas entertainment technology, performing arts management, costume construction, design for stage and screen and directing applicants.

Acting applicants may submit a video or, if possible, arrange a suitable audition in their home town. If acting applicants are selected, they must be available to attend the recall weekend in Wellington.

With the exception of Australian students, overseas students are not eligible for any government support while studying at the school and have to pay full course fees.

International tuition fees are outlined in the table below. There will be an additional pastoral care fee of $250 and charges for Student Services levy and international insurance. This table indicates the annual tuition fee structure for each year up to 2010.

Year Estimated Fee
2008 $23,250
2009 $24,180
2010 $25,155

Medical and Travel Insurance is compulsory for each international student. Proof of insurance is required before a student has an offer of place confirmed at Toi Whakaari. The insurance must cover the full period of study and transit from the student's home country. Toi Whakaari recommends Unicare Insurance's Premier Policy to our students.

Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students

Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from Toi Whakaari or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international.

If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.moh.govt.nz.

Accident Insurance: The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at http://www.acc.co.nz.

Medical and Travel Insurance: International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.

"I looked at Drama courses in the UK, but I wanted a degree. Then I came to Toi Whakaari on a school field trip last year and that was it, because this course just looked so exciting, and it didn't force me to specialise."
