Costume: How to Apply
To apply for the Costume Construction course students must be at least 18 years of age by the first day of term (Monday 18 February 2013). There is no upper age limit.
Applications are invited from candidates of all backgrounds with or without prior technical experience in theatre or fashion, although a basic level of sewing proficiency is required.
Entry to the course is by portfolio and interview.
Download the application form here.
Applicants must fill it out and post it to arrive by the application deadline, together with the following attached:
- four current passport sized photos,
- verified copies of your academic transcripts (see frequently asked questions),
- a portfolio of photos showing two of the garments you have made recently (see below for more information),
- two written references using this reference form
- a 500 word statement outlining why they wish to study Costume Construction (see below for more information).
The deadline for applications for entry into the Costume Construction course in 2013 is Friday 28 September 2012.
Applicants attend a Powhiri at Toi Whakaari in Wellington at 11 am on Friday 26 October, followed by an opportunity to meet current students and staff over lunch, koiwi, and finally a ticket to the evening performance of the Toi Whakaari production The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. The weekend of 27 and 28 October is then set aside for interviews. During the interview the applicant’s sense of vocation and vision in relation to a career in the industry is assessed. If applicants are unable to travel to Wellington for this weekend alternative arrangements may be possible.
Once these interviews are complete, successful applicants are offered a place or may be recalled for an additional interview in Wellington. All applicants will be notified of the interview panel’s decision by mail. On acceptance successful applicants must have their doctor fill in a confidential medical report.
Personal Statement
Please type a personal statement which outlines (for yourself personally and also as a theatre/film practitioner):
- Your most significant achievements to date
- What qualities you would bring to Toi Whakaari
- What you expect to gain from your time at Toi Whakaari
Please keep this to around 500 words. You are particularly encouraged to share some personal insights and influences that shaped you.
Portfolio of Costume Work
Provide colour photos of two costume or clothing projects (e.g. a costume for the school play, a garment you have made for yourself, etc). Photos should include a complete front view of the garment, a complete back view, and close ups of any interesting detail. If you are selected for an interview you will be asked to bring this work with you. DO NOT SEND IN THE GARMENTS.
Advice
Anyone is welcome to come into the school to observe a class or to experience the ambience of Te Whaea. Please call at least a fortnight in advance to make a time.
Money
Fees for 2013 are yet to be confirmed. In 2012 tuition fees are $6242 ( incl GST). There is also a Student Services Levy of approximately $300 – $450 per year (subject to confirmation). Students need to buy around $300 worth of equipment before the course starts. It is also recommended that students allocate an additional $1000 to $1500 per annum for associated course costs.
Students should contact StudyLink as soon as possible prior to the beginning of the school year to start the application process.
International Students
Toi Whakaari welcomes applications from overseas students. With the exception of Australian students, overseas students are not eligible for any government support while studying at the school and have to pay full course fees. For more advice on international fees, click here.
