Directing: How to Apply

Entry to the MTA is competitive - only six places are available in any one year. To be considered you will need to have either a degree in Theatre or Performing Arts, or extensive practical or professional theatre or related experience.

For more information contact theatre@vuw.ac.nz

Once the full application and references have been received, short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview/audition between late October – early December (exact dates to be arranged). Overseas applicants may be interviewed over the phone (see International Students below).

All applicants are interviewed by a selection panel comprised of faculty members from Toi Whakaari and from Victoria University. Applicants are also asked to prepare their directorial response to a text (allocated before the interview). This will include the direction of two professional actors in a scene from the play.

Once these interviews are complete, successful applicants are offered a place or may be recalled for an additional interview in Wellington. All applicants will be notified of the interview panel’s decision by mail. On acceptance successful applicants must have their doctor fill in a confidential medical report. Official enrolment into the degree for accepted students will be finalised once the accepted applicant has completed the Victoria University Enrolment procedure.

Money

Fees for the Master of Theatre Arts (Directing) are set by Victoria University of Wellington. For more information on student fees and financial matters contact Victoria University (www.vuw.ac.nz).

As an indication, in 2012 the tuition fees for Part 1 of the Master of Theatre Arts in Directing  are $10,244.00 (including Student Services Levy and GST). Students may be eligible for student loans and allowances depending on personal circumstances. Students should contact StudyLink as soon as possible prior to the beginning of the school year to start the application process.

International Students

Toi Whakaari welcomes applications from overseas students.

International students applying for the MTA should apply through Victoria International in the first instance. This process can take a long time. Information on how to do this can be found at www.victoria.ac.nz/international. International students will still be required to complete the MTA Application using the Additional Information form and Reference form

With the exception of Australian students, overseas students are not eligible for any government support while studying at the school and have to pay full course fees. For more information, see International Students (Toi Whakaari) / International-Students@vuw.ac.nz (Victoria University of Wellington); or contact the Co-ordinator of Postgraduate Studies, Theatre, at Victoria University.
