The Blind Bit of Difference Award for The Pohutukawa Tree CompanyView Gallery
An audio-described performance of The Pohutukawa Tree by last year’s graduating class of Toi Whakaari has been recognised by the Association of Blind Citizens of New Zealand. Sarah Adams, who was production manager for the play and also drove the audio description, has been presented with The Blind Bit of Difference Award on behalf of The Pohutukawa Tree Company.
The Pohutukawa Tree by one of New Zealand’s iconic playwrights, is set in the ‘50s New Zealand, a country on the cusp of change. A proud and spiritual Maori matriarch, Aroha attempts to instruct her children in Pakeha ways. But the post-war world of the ‘50s has arrived and she is left increasingly isolated as everything she loves and stands for comes under siege. Graduate Rachel House directed this rarely-performed classic New Zealand text for the Schools graduating actors.
