Overview

We are honoured to have the skills of Senior Conceptual Designer and Sculptor from Weta Workshop, Johnny Fraser-Allen join us for this three-day Creature Sculpting workshop.

His skills can be seen in major films like King Kong, Tintin, Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit and he is currently creating 3D sculptures for The Labyrinth board game by Riverhorse. 

Over three days you will take your creature creation from page to marquette, learning the basics of sketching, sculpting, and a range of new skills to apply to your hobby or work.

By the end of the workshop you will have a unique pot plant homunculus to take home! 

cancellation policy

All workshops are run subject to demand and Toi Whakaari reserves the right to alter dates, times and venue of the course for reasons beyond our control.

Toi Whakaari cancellation of the workshop due to pandemic level 3 or 4 will result in a full refund. Participant cancellation due to sickness with a Doctor’s certificate will result in a full refund.

Participant cancellation without a Doctor’s certificate and within 2 weeks of the workshop will result in a 50% refund, or the choice to transfer to another workshop later in the year.

Tutor

Johnny Fraser-Allen is a senior conceptual designer and sculptor with over a decade¹s experience in the film industry at the Award-Winning Weta Workshop. He has designed characters and creatures for Peter Jackson’s King Kong and The Hobbit Trilogy, Andrew Adamson's Narnia Chronicles and Stephen Spielberg's Tintin


With the help of Weta's facilities and its creators, Richard Taylor and Tania Rogers, Johnny has spent over eight years creating the immersive world of The Gloaming Trilogy. With three novels worth of written story, the Gloaming has been illustrated with over 40 sculptures, over fifty illustrations and more than one hundred watercolor painting which are now touring the world in the Gloaming exhibition. 

Johnny is also working on another sculpture based book project titled The Wandering Woods, as well as a children's book titled The Preschool Pirates. He also created all of the illustrations for The Squickerwonkers written by actress Evangeline Lilly, published through Titan books.
